Department Codes in Schoolnet
The effort to clean up and resolve issues related to department codes from PowerSchool to Schoolnet is complete. In Schoolnet, you will now see the full list of department codes and the mappings of courses match the same mappings in PowerSchool. This is especially helpful when scheduling assessments and/or mapping curriculum, so please note you will now have the complete list of departments to improve your search for courses.

Home Base Website Updated with Schoolnet Roles and Permissions Documents
The Schoolnet Roles and Permissions webpages have been updated. Please check out to find the latest documentation and information about setting up user roles and permissions for Schoolnet.

New District-to-District Sharing Feature is Now Available!
You can now designate resources in Schoolnet at the district level as “All Districts” materials and share them among all districts in NC. As schools submit teacher work through Schoolnet for district approval, districts will now have the option to make those resources available to all other districts in the state. Resources created at the school or district level can also be shared among districts. This means you will be able to showcase and share your teachers’ and curriculum leaders’ work, not only within your own district, but across all districts in North Carolina. This option is now available, in addition to the Submit to State option as another way NC teachers and leaders can share instructional resources statewide. We hope you will take advantage of the ability to showcase the work being done in your district and the opportunity to share with your peers.

Schoolnet Training Site
The Schoolnet training site has more meaningful data/reports to explore and review in your training efforts. Additionally, the training site offers tens of thousands of assessment items and instructional materials to support your training efforts, including these features:
  • Each LEA and Charter School will have their own new unique set of teacher login accounts to use for training purposes and can access students and school leadership connected with their teacher.
  • LEAs / Charter Schools will share district leadership accounts.
  • You will now also have logins for additional role-specific users. LEAs/Charter School will share a pool of logins for scenario-based login accounts, e.g. School Library Media Coordinators, ITFs, Coaches, Teachers who have permission to create benchmarks, staff or any teacher who has ability to approve assessment items, or approve instructional materials and more.

The training site will continue to be accessed at Then select Home Base Training District from the dropdown tab next to the “sign in with” prompt. Next, log in with your user/password.

Professional Development System Launches in Home Base
The professional development tab inside the Educator Effectiveness online tool, which is part of Home Base, is now active. The professional development catalog is now live enabling educators to sign up for available professional development modules. The catalog will continue to grow as new learning opportunities are added. New modules will be loaded July 1, 2014.

Additional information about navigating the professional development system will be available on the regional wikis managed by the professional development leads. New Home Base Weekly Technical Update Webinar Starts April 16The Home Base team will begin hosting a new weekly webinar next week — a Home Base Technical Update. The first one will start at noon on Wednesday, April 16, however, after that it will be available each Tuesday. The already established Home Base Weekly Project Status Webinar for superintendents and their invitees continues each Tuesday from 11 a.m. until noon, so this new webinar will follow it beginning Tuesday, April 22.
This webinar will provide more details to our users on technical issue resolutions, data imports, new page and functionality implementations, state reporting and timelines. Targeted audiences are NC SIS coordinators and data managers. More information on how to register for this webinar will be sent via NC SIS email.

Official Launch of Home Base Professional Development Tool On Its Way
The NCDPI staff are in the final stages of preparation for the official launch of the new Home Base Professional Development tool. You may have already noticed the addition of the professional development tab inside the Educator Effectiveness online tool. Many of you have taken advantage of the face-to-face overview training dates included on the Regional Education Services Alliances’ partnership calendars.

New Video Tutorials Available for Building your ClassScape Assessments in Home Base
Two new videos have been added to the Home Base website to help teachers and district testing coordinators with making the transition from ClassScape to Home Base (via Schoolnet).
One video is a step-by-step guide for how a teacher can go into ClassScape and generate a test blueprint for any existing ClassScape classroom tests and then use the blueprint to find the same items in Schoolnet, and rebuild the same test for delivery to students in Home Base. The other video is for district-level testing staff and provides the step-by-step walk-through for how to generate benchmark assessments blueprints from within ClassScape, and then use the blueprints to build the benchmark assessments in Schoolnet.

New on the Web: Roles for Instructional Coaches Using Schoolnet
If your school has Instructional Coaches, or those in similar positions, who need access to aggregate data and lesson plans in Schoolnet, you will need to add specific roles to their account. A new document provides steps and guidance for giving school-level staff access to aggregate data and access to the teacher lesson planner. To help you, a new document, “More on Roles and Permissions – Access for School Instructional Coaches,” has been added to the Home Base website at: There you’ll also find general information about roles and permissions, as well as documents outlining how to set up a teacher with access to build benchmark assessments and to share assessments.

NC Online Evaluation Tool-
NCDPI staff are working with vendors to make the evaluation tool work effectively for you. Superintendents, principals and HR directors in each LEA are asked to take some time before and after the holidays to assess the workflow process. It is our goal to provide a tool that meets your needs. As shared with superintendents, we want to convene a group to review the performance since changes were made over the Thanksgiving weekend. A Look at What’s Coming in Schoolnet Throughout 2013-14
The resources in Schoolnet will get better and better as the tool matures. By the end of the 2013-14 school year, Schoolnet will have a lot of additional content and will continue to grow thereafter.
The NCDPI is continually seeking and vetting great resources and assessment items and expanding the set of tools available to teachers in the platform. We are especially optimistic about the prospect of being able to gather and share great work from North Carolina teachers in Schoolnet. Teachers are creating excellent lesson plans, units and assessments, and Schoolnet offers educators an opportunity to highlight and share that great work. Home Base Improvements Included in Upgraded Version of Schoolnet
Speaking of Schoolnet, which is the Home Base Instructional Improvement System (IIS), it was upgraded during the Dec. 7-8 weekend to Version 15.2. This new version includes some new features, addresses many identified bugs, and is designed to improve product responsiveness and stability.

Mark Your Calendars: Home Base Symposium on Tap in February
The 2014 Home Base Symposium is set for Feb. 17-19, 2014 at Greensboro’s Sheraton Four Seasons, Koury Convention Center. We know you don’t want to miss it! This year’s theme is “All Roads Lead to Home Base,” which describes our ultimate goal of integrating Student Information, Standards and Curriculum, Instructional Design, Practice and Resources, Assessments, Data Analysis and Reporting, and Professional Development and Educator Evaluation into one system with single sign-on capability. This will be the 28th year for the conference but our first as the Home Base Symposium — as most of you know, this replaces the former NC WISE conference (just as the new student information system, PowerSchool, replaces NC WISE as the SIS tool).

Cost is $115 for registration postmarked by Jan. 31, 2014, and $250 for late registration postmarked on or after Feb. 1, 2014. The $250 fee applies to on-site registration as well. So take advantage of early registration now.

Decision Date Moved for Home Base Options
NCDPI has extended the window for local school districts to make a final "opt-in" decision for the non-required parts of the Home Base system to July 15, 2014. By opting in, local districts agree to pay $4 per student based on average daily membership (ADM) and will be able to fully use all parts of Home Base — not just PowerSchool, the NC Educator Evaluation System and state-required online assessments.

New Webinar Just Announced on Gradebook Set-Up
The topic for next week's Home Base webinar has changed from OpenClass to Setting up Gradebook. “PowerTeacher Gradebook: Set-up and Operation” will be offered Thursday, Dec. 12, from 3:30-5:30 p.m. and should be especially helpful to these audiences: teachers, data managers, LEA Home Base coordinators, and curriculum staff. The session is designed to help teachers set up and understand how to use the PowerTeacher Gradebook and will include step-by-step instructions on how to setup your gradebook, using both the grade setup tab and other setup needed for the gradebook to calculate correctly.

IMPORTANT ScanIt Update: New Version and New Scan Sheets
As part of the upcoming update of the Schoolnet component of Home Base to version 15.2, there will be an update to the ScanIt software which will result in new scan sheets when printing to plain paper. If you have paper answer sheets that students have completed or that you plan to use with assessments scheduled over the next week, it is very important to get those results scanned in before the close of business (5 p.m.) on Friday, December 6.

If you have assessments scheduled after December 6 and plan to administer them using paper-pencil, please hold off on printing answer sheets from within Home Base until Monday, December 9. The answer sheets that you have been printing will not be compatible with the new version of ScanIt. The scanning process and the supported scanners will not change with this upgrade.

Update on Classroom Assessment Items in SchoolNet
The attached slides have the counts of items that are currently in the system, plus one slide that has the subject and grade breakdown for the remaining purchased items (these purchased items will be added in batches throughout the 13-14 school year – we just got the first 2000 last week to start review and we will try to get them live quickly because it will add items at the k-2 level).

Our recommendation to help build out the subjects and grades covered is for LEAs and schools to add their own items and then share them within the system. They can submit items to be shared with all teachers in their school and from there items can be shared across districts and even at the state level. These would be for classroom assessments. We also will work to expand the benchmark items offered and updates will be sent when more is known about that.
